Breathwork has been a buzzword for a few years now, with videos online of people writing in pain, screaming & crying. People going through some of their most vulnerable moments. Yes, it is a powerful practice, that unlocks areas that you have blocked off for so long. It allows you to feel & express what you have been holding deep within your body & energy system & release it. Whether those blocks are a result of trauma, conditioning of not feeling safe to express, breathwork can get you there.

The Three Breathwork Types at AMHH

Relaxation breathwork – focused on dropping you into the parasympathetic nervous system, helping the body to shift from a state of stress (fight or flight) into rest & digest. Aims to lower stress levels, reduce anxiety & promote deep relaxation.

Balanced Breathwork – Designed to create harmony between mind & body, syncing the natural rhythms of the body to bring coherence. Aims to balance the nervous system, promoting a state of balance, grounding, clarity, & optimal energy flow.

Activation Breathwork – Uses intentional hyperventilation to connect to the sympathetic nervous system. Releasing DMT this style is often used to release emotions, stimulate energy flow, release trauma & induce altered states of consciousness.

A Breathwork session with me

Our breathwork sessions are available in person at either our Windsor or our Glenbrook locations. They are also available to be booked online so you can experience the breathwork process in the comfort & safety of your own home.

Through a breathwork session with me you may be taken through any of the above styles of breathwork, or a combination of all 3.

Before I take you into a full breathwork session I will complete an assessment with you to determine your blood oxygen levels. This gives me an idea of what you’re body is ready to handle.

My sessions are set up for a 45minute breathwork session with 15minutes extra to allow for you to integrate & discuss anything that came up for you that you would like to talk about. While I lead these sessions for you, it is about what you are ready & willing to look at within yourself. You are in control of how deep you go & whether you want to talk afterwards.

Breathwork & Meditation classes

If you would like to experience the same effects in an intimate group setting you are in luck. I also offer regular weekly classes online & in person at Mulgoa.

What you may experience

You may experience a wide range of different symptoms during a breathwork session:

Physical symptoms:

Everyone’s experiences are different & it is important to enter each session without expectation but by setting an intention to sit with whatever comes up & allow it to flow so it may be released.

No matter what comes up in a session for you, know that I am here to support you & it is ok to feel everything that comes up. Please listen to your body & if you feel that it is too much for you, you can take yourself back to relaxing or balancing breathing at any time.

My First Breathwork Experience

I first attended a breathwork event back in 2022. I went to a big full day event with a few friends & colleagues, with about 250 people on the floor in this big warehouse style setting, concrete floor & no heating. There we 2 main facilitators & about 6 helpers supporting everyone there.

I’d heard from friends who had been to similar smaller events about what you may experience & thought I was prepared. Some on my own & some supported by different helpers. All the while the room was filled with other people sobbing, screaming & going through their own shit. Let me tell you for someone listening into a lot of it other than the music playing, it would have sounded like some sort of crazy horror movie.

Afterwards, I left feeling so raw, vulnerable & open. I was oversensitive to noises, other people’s emotions & any comments made hit me deeply. I didn’t want to talk to anyone. I now understand that this was because the setting didn’t allow for integration & kind of just through you in the deep end without the nurturing that was so desperately needed for people reliving traumatic experiences locked in their bodies.

My next event I was lucky to win a free ticket to & I went on my own, determined to get the most out of the experience. I went & there were about 12 full trained breathwork & mental health practitioners in the room & only about 50people in a warm, events space. Each practitioner guided a section, followed by integration time, where people were encouraged to journal, mindful colour, walk outside to ground or just lie there.

During this event there was a focus on releasing specific emotions & balancing the mental health attached to them. Yes, there were a few moments where people were crying or screaming but they were always supported & so was I anytime I was going through something. Afterwards the practitioners would walk around during integration & ask how everyone was doing & if they needed to talk about anything.

At the end of the day, I left feeling balanced, calm, joyful, lighter & released. I’d gone through just as much, but in a way that allowed for it to integrate before diving into the next session & that held space for me to heal in a nurturing way.

I tell you these two stories not to put you off breathwork or promote or dis the companies involved. But to show that there are different ways to experience breathwork & that the environment & way it’s done can make all the difference to who you feel coming out of a session. These approaches have informed my practice & will allow me to support you through anything that comes up in a grounded & nurturing way. So, when you leave you will feel at your best, instead of rubbed raw emotionally.

Contraindication

Generally speaking, relaxation breathing is where you start, & it’s safe regardless of what conditions you have. As you move up into the balanced breathing it may not be recommended if you have a low blood oxygen level. The activation breathwork can be full on for your body, it is recommended that you only do these with support from a professional & not under certain conditions or when you have illnesses or issues.

When you shouldn’t do intense breathwork sessions:

  • Under the influence of alcohol
  • During anxiety or panic attack – may worsen symptoms
  • If you have a heart issue
  • While recovering from surgery
  • If you are pregant
  • During your period

If you have any other health condition that isn’t listed here, please consult your healthcare professional before commencing any kind of breathwork practice. You are also welcome to ask me in regard to your condition, but this may still be my advice anyway.

60minute 1-1 Breathwork

Be held & supported through a breathwork journey. Through this session you will experience a 45minute breathwork practice with 15min for integration & processing. This will be a combination of assessment, relaxation, balancing & activation breathwork as well as mediation to help you set your intention & drop into the practice. Available in person or online.
